The Eruption of Mount Vesuvius Pompeii

The pools in Pompeii were used mostly for decoration. In 89 BC, after the final occupation of the city by Roman General Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Pompeii was finally annexed to the Roman Republic. A busy commercial centre with a population of 10,000-20,000, the ancient Pompeii covered about 160 acres on the seaward end of the fertile Sarno Plain. In the 5th century BC, the Samnites conquered Pompeii (and all the other towns of Campania); the new rulers imposed their architecture and enlarged the town.

The Pompeii Eruption of Vesuvius Italy

Wine fermenting jars had been sealed over, and this would have happened around the end of October. Death for the inhabitants was slow and painful. They would have inhaled the hot gas and ash that would have caused their lungs to flood with fluid. Subsequent breaths would have mixed more ash in the lungs that would have caused a kind of cement which led to suffocation.

Mount Vesuvius What Happened ??

The eruption of 1906 was particularly destructive, killing over 100 people and ejecting the most lava ever recorded from a Vesuvian eruption.
The last major eruption was in March 1944 and it destroyed the villages of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Massa di Somma, Ottaviano, and part of San Giorgio a Cremano. The last time Vesuvius erupted was in 1944. Since this time “HE” has remained dormant.

Pliy The Younger Mount Vesuvius

Gaius Plinius Secundus -or, to use his English name, Pliny- was born in 23 or 24 at Novum Comum (modern Como), a small city in the region known as Gallia. This volcanic eruption is the first to be described in detail. The letter-writing Pliny the Younger was stationed about 18 miles away in Misenum from which vantage point he could see the eruption and feel the preceding earthquakes. The only eye witness account account of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, 79 AD. belongs to Pliny the Younger whose letters describe his experience during the eruption.

Mt Vesuvius Lava

The lava is composed of adesite, viscous in nature. The whole of Mount Vesuvius comprises layers of lava, volcanic ash and pumice. ll the zones at the slopes of the mountain are formed by transported earth of lava mud Monte Somma which goes down from the steep slopes in the rainy seasons through deep and narrow grooves called channels or more commonly “lagni”.

The casts reveal and marvelous amount of detail about the lives of the people. Inside Pompeii, you can go to the homes of Pompeii’s wealthier citizens and ancient street cafes where locals dined, hear numerous anecdotes about daily life in Pompeii, and see graffiti dating back to Roman times.Although the troops of the Social League, headed by Lucius Cluentius, helped in resisting the Romans, in 80 BC Pompeii was forced to surrender after the conquest of Nola, culminating in many of Sulla’s veterans being given land and property, while many of those who went against Rome were ousted from their homes. Herculaneum was properly rediscovered in 1738 by workmen digging for the foundations of a summer palace for the King of Naples, Charles of Bourbon.

Pompeii Herculaneum Italy

Along with Herculaneum, its sister city, Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in 79 AD. The gate tickets to Pompeii and Herculaneum can be purchased on a combined ticket costing 20 euro per person for both sites and are generally not included in the cost of a tour. A Herculaneum trip gives a beautiful essence of Herculaneum without making you feel like you missed Pompeii.
